Paris without Cars for a Day
International, 10/6/2015

The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, proclaimed Sunday as the "day without cars", two months before the city is hosting a global summit on climate change.

The symbolic initiative aims to expose the air pollution caused by cars, urging that it must be reduced worldwide and that the capital must take steps to reduce the size of their carbon footprint.

The mayors of Sao Paulo, Brazil; Brussels, Belgium; and Bristol, Britain, were in Paris for the start of the day that took place in the popular avenue Champs Elysees.

Vehicles, including motor bikes, are also banned in one quarter of the capital and is "strongly" recommended that are not used in other areas. Those who still decide to use them must observe a speed limit of 20 kilometers per hour. The police will be vigilant.

Buses, ambulances, police cars, fire engines and taxis are exempt from this rule.

Paris has already tried to reduce pollution levels introducing bike rentals on the streets, bicycle paths and adopting enabling a fleet of electric vehicles for residents, which encourages drivers to leave their cars at home.
