Dominican Navy Occupies 45 Quintals of Conch

The Dominican Navy announced Monday the confiscation of a shipment of 45 pounds of queen conch, which fishing is banned from the first of July to October - set by Decree 833/03 and 31 269-99, 499-09 -  for the species Lobatus gigas (queen conch) and Cittarium pica (Burgao), among others.

The appropriation of this shipment was in Samaná, after the navy patrol intercepted the boat Little Diamond.

The ban is an administrative act established by the competent authorities of the Dominican State, that forbidden to take or remove species temporarily or permanently in a given area in order to protect their populations and ensure survival in their range geographic.

The conch cargo was delivered by the institution staff of the Department of Fisheries Control (CODOPESCA, by its Spanish acronym) of the Ministry of Agriculture in Samaná, states the story published in the digital portal zolFM.

Although the confiscation of 45 pounds of Lambí was made, the navy did not stop the fishermen, leaving the matter in the hands of the competent authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The military indicated that the seizure of the mollusk, which fishing is prohibited until 31 October, was made in cooperation with the authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture.
