Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Donates US $40 MM to Contribute to Environmental Preservation
International, 8/5/2015

Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation donated more than $40 million on Wednesday to contribute to the preservation and saving of the environment.

The amount was raised through auction of luxury items and unique experiences at the second annual gala, organized by the foundation of the same name of the actor in St Tropez.

Two private concerts with Elton John were sold for $3 million, a house on the island of DiCaprio in Belize, BlackadoreCaye, was sold for $11 million, and two Arctic expeditions with Prince Albert II of Monaco were sold for $1.6 million.

DiCaprio earned over $2 million by selling personal items, including his Rolex watch and work of Andy Warhol.

The actor and film producer opened the night explaining the mission of his foundation, to help protect endangered species and the regions where they live.

"Focus on the protection of these emblematic endangered species is almost like creating a worldwide network of Noah’s arks" DiCaprio said.

The foundation was founded in 1998. According to its website, it focuses on "the protection of biodiversity, conservation of the oceans, forests and climate change".

"We have decimated our forests, wilderness areas, have polluted and overfished in our rivers and oceans, all key ecosystems that are home not only to the biodiversity of our planet, but also make life here possible to us", said DiCaprio.

"I am very proud to be part of a night that will allow us to do much to protect the planet."

The gala was attended by stars such as Prince Albert II of Monaco, Kate Hudson, Orlando Bloom, Naomi Campbell and Heidi Klum. They were treated to performances by Elton John and John Legend.

The event was presented by the Swiss private banking group Julius Baer and co-sponsored by Chopard and Giorgio Armani.
