Environment Ministry Recovers Land along Border with Haiti
Dominican Republic, 4/29/2015

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has recovered ten thousand tareas of land (approximately 6 million square meters) from the Sabana Clara Forestry Project in Restauración, Dajabón province. The land had been illegally invaded by unscrupulous individuals in violation of environmental regulations.

In a press release, the Environment Ministry reported on Sunday that occupiers, who identified themselves as an association of landless farmers, came into the area over Holy Week with the idea of burning and replanting stretches of land for private benefit.

This land is state-owned property and is located along the border where protection of the biodiversity is a priority.

The recovery of the land was done under the auspices of the Provincial Directorate of Environment and Natural Resources in coordination with the National Environmental Protection Service (SENPA).

By order of Environment Minister Bautista Rojas Gómez, this property will be monitored and protected, which is vital to the ecology and stability of the border.
