Dominican Republic, 4/23/2015

As part of Earth Day, the US Embassy’s Green Team, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, will hold its traditional Green Fest this Sunday April 26th  at the National Botanic Garden. The Fest will start at 10 am.

The Dominican Republic is considered the eighth most vulnerable country in the world to the effects of climate change due to natural disasters, such as the erosion of beaches and destruction of coral reefs, according to Diario Libre newspaper.

The Green Fest aims to raise awareness among individuals and entire families about the importance of preserving the environment and implementing actions to reduce the impact of human beings on the planet.

Live music will be playing at the Festival as attendees walk among organic markets where they can purchase healthy food and crafts made from recycled materials. There will be an activity booth for small children; places to hear informative talks on recycling as well as workshops on environmentally friendly practices for the whole family.

In addition, a contest on the social media networks entitled “our community for the planet” will be held. US Ambassador in the DR, James W. Brewster, will hand out prizes to the contest winners.
