Term Environmental audit

A systematic, documented, periodic and objective evaluation performed to determine whether an organization or project’s management system and environmental performance meets previously established regulations, whether the system has been implemented effectively and whether it is sufficient in order to achieve the outlined policy and environmental objectives.

In the Dominican Republic, the Reglamento del Sistema de Permisos y Licencias Ambientales (Environmental Permits and Licenses Regulation) defines an environmental audit as “the method consisting of the comprehensive review of facilities, processes, storage, transport, security and risks-- among other things-- of activities or projects currently under construction and/or operation, which permits the determination of the level of compliance with the environmental management and adaptation program, as well as any other condition or requirement established in the environmental permit or license for the activity.” It is also known as an eco-audit.
