Term Barrier reef
Definition

Offshore linear structures extending parallel to the shoreline and that arise from submerged platforms. They are separated from the shoreline by a lagoon that is usually deep. Corals grow both in the calm waters of the lagoon and on the front wall of the reef.

On the southern coast of the Dominican Republic, the Puerto Viejo and Azua reefs are the most significant. The largest barrier reef system is located on the Atlantic coast and is called Buen Hombre. It extends some 30 kilometers from Bahía Hicaquitos to Punta Rusia in the province of Monte Cristi.
