Term Chemosynthesis

Process by which certain types of bacteria produce organic matter from inorganic elemental substances (chemical oxidation), such as hydrogen sulfide and sulfur. It is a phenomenon similar to photosynthesis, but it takes place in deep sea ocean vents, where the sources of energy are chemical components of gases that emerge from the ocean floor, not sunlight. The bacteria that carry out this process, called chemotrophs, are considered the basis of the food chain, as they are the primary producers providing carbon and energy for an entire ecosystem.
