Term Salinity

Indicator of the total concentration of salt in a given volume of water. It is expressed in parts per thousand (%). It is the result of the combination of different salts that are dissolved in seawater, principally chlorides, carbonates and sulfates. Seawater is an aqueous solution of salts, which gives it a characteristic flavor. Of these salts, sodium chloride, known as common salt, stands out because it makes up 80 percent of the total salt concentration.

On average, the salinity of the Caribbean Sea is 35 to 36 parts per thousand.
