Term Bog

Extension of stagnant and shallow waters where dense aquatic vegetation often grows. They form in plains where drainage is insufficient, or in areas abandoned by the waters of a river, such as former river beds which were once wide and have since been reduced by some cause that has affected the river’s flow. Swamps may be of fresh water or saltwater. Often the soil in swamps contains a considerable percentage of plant matter.

In the Dominican Republic, there are swampy areas around lakes and lagoons and in places where drainage is non-existent or very limited, as is the case of the Gran Estero, located between Nagua and Sánchez.
