Term Zonation (ecology)
Definition

The spatial distribution to different types of geographic areas.  Ecological zoning is the spatial distribution of communities of plants and animals within a specific habitat or area according to their adaptability and environmental factors including physical gradients (temperature, humidity, salinity) and chemical gradients (substrata).  In many aquatic ecosystems, a zoning may be defined by species occurrence in recognizable bands that may delineate, for example, a deep extension of water or a height extension in an intertidal zone.
