Term Coastal marine area

A coastal band comprising the first 20 kilometers, which extend from the maritime land zone towards the open seas, and include waters from zero to 100 meters in depth.  Despite the fact that the coastal maritime zone represents only 10% of the ocean area, it is of great importance, as 90% of marine life is found there, thanks to the wealth of nutrients which support the world’s fisheries.  This zone is also the interface between land and sea ecosystems, where one can find a variety of fragile and important ecosystems, from the perspective of production as well as protection.
