Definition | A non-cellular biological entity that is only able to reproduce in a host cell. It consists of nucleic acid covered by protein. Some animal viruses are also surrounded by membranes. Viruses cause many diseases in plants and animals, and also in humans. Some of the more commonly known are the influenza virus, which causes the flu, the herpes virus and the HIV virus, which causes AIDS. |
