Term Vertebrate

An animal with an internal skeleton made of bone or cartilage set around a central longitudinal axis called a spine or backbone, which provides the body with a sustained support and a flexibility of movement. Vertebrates are represented by almost 60,000 species, among them fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

One example is the feral pig (Sus scrofa), a species introduced to the Dominican Republic from Europe. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the feral pig is one of the most harmful exotic vertebrates to the native communities and the ecosystems they occupy, especially on oceanic islands.
