Term Nutrient

External chemical product that an organism must ingest through its food, in order to be able to live, grow and reproduce. Examples are proteins, sugars, fats, vitamins and salts.

There are six main types of nutrients the body requires: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. It is important to consume these six nutrients daily in order to build and maintain a healthy body. The food pyramid developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is a guide as to what should be consumed daily to get the nutrients the body needs.
