Term Continental Seas

Seas which are located almost entirely within continents-- practically isolated-- and which are connected with the ocean through narrow channels. Among the continental seas in existence is the Mediterranean Sea, connected with the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar that separates the European and African continents. In its most narrow point between Punta Oliveros in Spain and Punta Sires in Morocco, the strait is approximately 14.4 kilometers wide.

Other continental seas include the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Sea of Japan.
