Term Combating Desertification

Set of activities that form part of an integrated environmental plan for the sustainable management of arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas, which are aimed at the prevention or reduction of land degradation, the rehabilitation of partially degraded land, and the recovery of desertified lands.

The fight against desertification in the Dominican Republic began with the organization of workshops and programs that involved governmental and nongovernmental institutions. Later, in 2005 the Commission to Combat Desertification was formed. At present, the actions and projects against desertification fall under the umbrella topic of land degradation. The topic of land degradation is of utmost global interest, a fact which facilitates the management of funds for research projects and the implementation of mitigation strategies for soil degradation in general. The liaison agency for the implementation of the Convention to Combat Desertification and Drought in the Dominican Republic is the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.1
