Term Krill

Groups of crustacean species that live in the open sea, known as euphausiids, most of which feed on plankton. The species that is most commonly identified by this generic name is Euphausia superba, a small crustacean similar to the shrimp whose length varies between 8 and 70 mm and is found in the Antarctic. It plays an important role in the food chain as a nutrient to numerous organisms, such as penguins, fish and marine mammals (whales), which may require up to two tons of krill at once. Krill is, therefore, an essential link in the Antarctic marine ecosystem
