Term Organic farming
Definition

A set of methods and techniques for agricultural production and raising farm animals based on natural systems which do not use synthetic chemical products, and which respect the environment and preserve soil fertility. Organic agriculture employs mechanical-biological methods and vegetable-based pesticides to control pests and disease and to promote the rational and harmonious use of natural resources.

Commercially, a product that is obtained through this technique ,and which has been certified as such by a legally incorporated company is labeled organic. If it does not have the certification label, it is known as a natural product.

Organic agriculture is of considerable importance for the Dominican Republic. Although contemporary ideas about organic production were introduced to the country in the early 80s, it was not until the mid-1990s that production began to expand. Nowadays, it represents an important component of the agricultural sector. Between 1999 and 2000 alone, organic exports doubled, making up approximately 20% of the total agricultural exports, worth US$20.9 million.1 Currently, the Dominican Republic is one of the world’s leading exporters of tropical organic products. According to estimates, in 2005, there were 9,442 certified organic producers, covering an area of nearly 72,000 hectares. The principal organic exports are bananas, cacao, limes, eggplants, peppers and avocados, whose export generated US$66.57 million in 2009. Banana production alone accounts for over 50% of all organic exports in the country. 2
