Term Family

The taxonomic rank between the order and the genus, or between the superfamily and subfamily. Due to the enormous difficulty of classifying certain species, the superfamily allows the grouping of various similar families, while the individuals of one family can be organized in subfamilies and, thus, in similar species and genus. For example, one of the richest families in plant species in Hispaniola is the Orchidaceae, known as the family of orchids.
