Term Sponge

Aquatic invertebrate animals which mainly grow adhered to a substrate from which it does not separate or move.  Sponges lack authentic tissue and, thanks to an aquiferous system of pores, channels and chambers, they filter and feed on organic material that is found suspended in the water.  There are 8,000 species of sponges in the world, of which only 150 live in fresh water.
