Term Nonformal environmental education

Non-formal environmental education is the acquisition of knowledge, skills and values that lead to the adoption of positive attitudes toward the environment. It does not operate under the procedures of designed curriculum, but does entail planning which allows for greater responsiveness to environmental issues.

In the Dominican Republic, Article 56 of Law 64-00 authorizes the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Culture, to carry out environmental education programs, both formal and non-formal, with the participation of public and private institutions.

In the modality of non-formal environmental education, the environmental education for sustainable development strategy in the Dominican Republic prioritizes meeting the educational needs of the following target groups: local governments, the central government, Congress, the Armed Forces, the tourism sector, the industrial sector, agricultural producers, community organizations, non-governmental organizations, youth organizations and the transportation sector.
