Term Coastal marine ecosystem
Definition

Zone in which coastal areas and the lands adjacent to them converge and influence each other reciprocally. The coastal zone includes water basins that are deposited on the coast and land annexes, estuarine waters, the coasts and ocean waters near the coast. The Dominican coastal area and its adjacent islands have an extension of 1,668.40 kilometers, including some 455 coastal marine ecosystems, consisting of 41 rocky shore zones, 141 coastal lagoons, 19 estuaries, 17 coral reef, 20 mangrove ecosystems, 192 sandy beaches and 25 sand dunes. In the coastal marine ecosystems of the Dominican Republic, some 1,500 marine species have been identified.
