Term Black coral

A type of soft coral that belongs to the Antipatharia order. Its polyps are arranged around a skeleton axis consisting of horny black material. This coral, despite its name, has a brown and orange color when alive. It forms long branches from which smaller branches derive, with a lighter color than the main branch. Novice divers often confuse them with algae or dead branches. These corals are treasured by the jewelry industry. This fact, along with the fact that they grow very slowly, has resulted in the need for protective regulations.
