Term Coliform

Group of bacteria commonly found in soil and in the digestive tract of humans and warm-blooded animals. Fecal coliform are traditionally used as indicators for monitoring quality of drinking water and food, as they indicate their level of contamination. The absence of coliforms indicates, with some certainty, that the water or the food is microbiologically safe from a public health standpoint. Coliform tests are also used to determine the bacteriological quality of effluent treatment systems for sewage.
