Term Reef Limestone
Definition

Limestone that is found in the shape of rings or lines in the coastal intertidal zone, and which is composed of the fossilized remains of reef organisms such as corals and calcareous algae.

Limestone reef is distributed throughout the national territory in the Atlantic coastal plains, San Pedro de Macoris, Miches, Seibo peak, Catalina Island, Catalinita Beata, Barahona, Higuey, Los Haitises, the Cabrera Promontory and the Enriquillo river basin. 1,2

The quantity of different types of marble, including limestone reef, has been estimated at more than 300 million cubic meters, with an approximate value of US$1.5 billion.3
