Term Biosecurity
Definition

Set of specific procedures for the safe transfer, handling and use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), their derivatives or products produced through biotechnology and genetic engineering.

The Dominican Republic is developing a security framework which seeks to establish mechanisms for regulation, administration, public education and participation of different sectors of society. In order to do so, in January of 2002, the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety was adopted, which aims to "contribute to ensuring an adequate level of protection in the field of the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, taking also into account risks to human health, and specifically focusing on trans-boundary movements."
