Term Germplasm bank

A collection or reservoir of genetic material which includes the physical base of organisms’ hereditary characteristics. It is used for the ex-situ conservation of species. In the case of a collection of living plant material, it is composed of fertile seeds and spores, which are kept under special temperature and humidity conditions to allow their viability for long periods of time. The bank is a tool to maintain species in a dormant state so that they can germinate whenever new matter is needed, either for the purpose of new research or to obtain new plants to be reintroduced to their natural habitats.
