Non-governmental Organizations


Community Action Programme for Progress
Maximize the various resources available to lower class neighborhoods, by training social individuals, capable of transforming the weaknesses that may affect them in terms of education, culture, health, democratic values, the environment, productivity and nutrition, thus contributing to integrated, sustainable development.
Japan International Cooperation Agency
The objective of JICA's technical cooperation is the transfer of technologies, skills and knowledge that will lead to economic and social development, contribute to the improvement and development of technologies that are in tune with the country's circumstances and support the preparation of individuals who will be the foundation for socio-economic growth.
United States Agency for International Development
USAID supports the Dominican Republcic in its quest for improved governability and its fight against corruption. It also contributes to the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement between Central America and the Dominican Republic (DR-CAFTA) and the improvement of the capabilities of small businesses and rural communities which may benefit from commercial and income generation opportunities, while at the same time protecting the nation's natural resources and biodiversity.
Incorporated Development Association

APEDI's mission is to "Generate, promote, support and execute projects and initiatives arising in Santiago and the region, which contribute to the nation's sustainable development, with the purpose of improving the living conditions of Dominicans, through social equality and through the articulation of their actions with those of the public, private, national and international sectors". Its vision is "To be an organization of national leadership, with a high level of influence on the economic, social, and institutional development of the region and the nation, through innovative plans and projects that serve as a reference for the creation of national policies".

Interamerican Development Bank

"IDB is the largest regional development bank in the world and number one in Latin America and the Caribbean for multilateral funding of economic, social and institutional development projects, as well as those of commerce and regional integration,.

The IDB contributes to the socioeconomic development of Latin America and the Caribbean, not only through its institutions and programs, but also through loan activities, regional initiative leadership, research activities, and knowledge sharing. "

World Bank

The World bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance for developing countries around the world. Its mission is to fight poverty with passion and professionalism, seeking to obtain lasting results and to help people help themselves and their surroundings, delivering knowledge, creating capabilities and building partnerships in the public and private sectors. It is not a bank in the classic sense of the word. This international organization belongs to the 186 member nations and is comprised of two unique development institutions: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the the International Development Association (IDA).

Marine Biology Research Center

Centro de Investigaciones en Biología Marina (CIBIMA for its initials in Spanish) was established in 1962 by Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD). Its purpose is scientific research of marine and coastal fauna and flora.

Center for the Development of Agriculture and Forestry
Centro para el Desarrollo Agropecuario y Forestal (CEDAF for its initials in Spanish) is a foundation that promotes sustainable development in the farming and forestry sectors, through training, information, institutional innovation and the analysis of sector policies and strategies. Supported by a record of institutional excellence and agricultural competitiveness, its objective is to promote a competitive agriculture that contributes to a reduction in poverty levels and the protection of the environment.
Center for the Conservation and Eco-development of Samaná Bay and Its Surroundings
Its mission of to achieve the "Preservation and sustainable development of natural and cultural resources in Bahía de Samaná and its natural surroundings, with the active participation of its communities."
International Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development
This organization is a product of an initiative by Puerto Rican, Haitian and Dominican institutions, which have been joined by universities, government agencies and non governamental organizations in the field of environmental issues and management.
Dominican Environmental Consortium

CAD is a partnership among governamental and non-governamental organizations in the environmental and natural resource sectors. It is a private, non-profit services organization comprised of:
Fundación Loma Quita Espuela Centro de Agricultura Sostenible con Tecnología Apropiada (CASTA) (Quita Loma Espuela Foundation Center for Sustainable Agriculture with Appropriate Technologies), Jardín Botánico Nacional (National Botanical Garden), Grupo Jaragua (Jaragua Group), Fundación Progressio (Progessio Foundation), Centro para la Conservación y Ecodesarrollo de la Bahía de Samaná y su Entorno (CEBSE) (Center for the Conservation and Eco-development of Samaná Bay and Its Surroundings), Secretaria de Estado de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARENA) (Environment and Natural Resources State Secretariat), Programa Ecomar (Ecomar Program), Servicio Alemán de Cooperación Técnica Social (DED) (German Development Service), Asociación Suiza para la Cooperación Internacional Helvetas (Swiss Association for International Coorperation Helvetas) and Instituto de Desarrollo de la Economía Asociativa (Associative Economics Development Institute)."

Dominican Mining Consortium

Consorcio Minero Dominicano is a group of businessmen and women with a broad view of economic development in the Dominican Republic, who convened in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, with the intention of creating a company oriented towards mining activities. This select group of business men and women based this initiative on convictions resulting from their family and educational backgrounds, and were determined that their productive activities should, in addition to having a high technical component and state of the art technology, involve an authentic environmental and community responsibility, founded on the concepts of sustainable development.

Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Economic Growth Program in the Dominican Republic ESSEG - Columbia University

The ESSEG initiative is an important component of Center for Environment, Economy and Society, as it actively implements its core belief that local environments, economies and societies are interdependent, and that no one can thrive if all do not thrive. ESSEG's initiatives enable stakeholders to reach a consensus on how to achieve environmentally and socially sustainable economic growth.

Peace Corps

The Community Environmental Development Project (CEDP) works to increase the knowledge, skills, experience and attitudes of community promotors, educators, park staff, youth and women's groups to adopt appropriate behaviours in their interaction with the environment and to implement community projects and actions for sustainable development and environmental protection.

Delegation of the European Union to the Dominican Republic

European Union cooperation, through the seventh and eigth European Development Funds (EDF), included a wide array of fields of action, ranging from support to structural adjustments, to support for the private sector, including rural development, health, education, the mining sector, culture, infrastructure, neighborhood sanitation in poor areas and state reforms.

Enda Dominican Republic, Environment and Development in the Dominican Republic, Enda Caribbean Director: Mamerto Valerio

The Non-Governmental Organization "Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo en República Dominicana (Environment and Development in The Dominican Republic)", (enda-dom), is the representative to the Domincan Republic of the international NGO Environmental Development Action in the Third World, (Enda Third World), headquartered in Dakar, Senegal, Africa.

Nature Fund

The fund hosts workshops on desertification and its effects on various communities in the Dominican Republic. It conducts research to identify desertification affected areas. It supports and strengthens the abilities of NGOs and other community-centric organizations.

Cemex Foundation

The objective of the CEMEX foundation is to promote educational and cultural initiatives and, in particular, to promote scientific research and the professional and technical preparation of young generations. It also seeks to support initiatives in defense of the environment and those that seek to expand sustainable development practices.

Río Nazito Basin Protection Development Foundation

FUNDEPROCUNIPA is a non profit institution with no resources of its own, and no governamental help, which operates solely thanks to voluntary donations, both national and international in nature. It is comprised of thirty-five (35) farmers' associations, thirteen (13) women's associations, four (4) youth associations, three (3) neighborhood boards, three (3) ecologic associations and one (1) fishermen's association.

Punta Cana Ecologic Foundation

"Fundación Ecológica Punta Cana is a non-profit organization which was established to protect and preserve the natural resources of the Punta Cana Region, while at the same time contributing to the sustainable development of the Dominican Republic."

Loma Quita Espuela Foundation

The mission of Fundación Loma Quita Espuela is to provide the foundations for an integrated development of natural resources in the Quita Espuela and La Canela hills, including their buffer zones, thanks to programs in favor of community development, sustainable agriculture, forestry production and research and scientific reserve management.

Mahatma Gandhi Foundation

The preservation of everything that maintains life, that is to say earth, the environment, nature, and the order of life, is of supreme importance, as without it, we wouldn't exist.

Moscoso Puello Foundation

The FMP is dedicated to scientific research and the preservation of natural resources in the Dominican Republic.

Progressio Foundation

PROGRESSIO is a sustainable organization known for its contribution to natural resources and the environment. It seeks to develop and execute programs that improve the quality of life of human beings through the preservation of the environment.

Sur Futuro Foundation

Sur Futuro is a private, non-profit organization that started operations on November 16, 2001. It promotes development and social welfare in communities in the south region of the Dominican Republic. It aims to reduce high levels or poverty and inequality.

Taigüey Appropriate Technologies and Community Development Foundation

Fundación Taigüey is a non-governamental, non-profit organization that aims to promote, develop, councel, accompany and evaluate social transformation processes at a community level, promoting participative methodologies and the use of adequate technologies.

Río Limpio Anthroposophical Group

Nalga de Maco hill is located on the Central Mountain Range, with an approximate height of 2,000 meters above sea level. It is located in close proximity to the Río Limpio community. It stands out for its biodiversity (endemic or endangered plants and animals) and its abundance of water springs (Río Artibonito basin, a river that further along becomes the most important river in neighboring country Haiti).

Jaragua Group

Grupo Jaragua, Inc. is a non-profit, non-governamental organization established in 1987. Its mission is to achieve the effective management of biodiversity resources in the Dominican Republic, through research and project development, seeking to overcome the challenges of local conservation.

León Jimenes Group

An industrial consortium must, not only fulfill its mission of producing and marketing goods and services of the highest quality standards, but also look after the environment abiding by the laws that govern the sector and its economic obligations towards the state. Likewise, in reciprocity, it must contribute to the economic and social progress of the country that has enabled its progress and the community that consumes and uses its products/services.


GTZ is a worldwide services company in the field of development cooperation. The company, belonging to the German Federal Government and operating under a private law company structure, works in favor of the sustainable improvement of living conditions for the entire population of developing countries and those undergoing reform, and of preserving the natural basis of existence.

Santo Domingo Technological Institute

Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo is a private, non-profit university providing public education. It was established in 1972 by a group of young professionals commited to Dominican society, at the service of which they placed their abilities, their academic calling and the work discipline.

Santo Domingo Technological Institute - Director: Otto Coro

Intec-Ecológico is a conservationist group under the responsibility of the Co-curricular Unit (previously known as Co-curricular Department) of the Student Services Division of INTEC. It is a group comprised of INTEC students and other people who feel strongly about the need to preserve an ecologic balance, as well as the survival and development of humans, in a world whose limitations necessarily have to be a cause for permanent concern.

"The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been part of United Nation's system in the Dominican Republic since 1964. The UNDP focuses its work on five areas:

  • Environment and energy.
  • Crisis prevention and recovery.
Ecomar Programme

"Programa EcoMar, Inc. is a non-profit teaching institute which is scientific and educational in nature. Its research fields are: education and environmental management, fisheries, ecology and coastal and marine biodiversity. Its objective is to contribute to the conservation of coastal and marine resources on Hispaniola Island, based on scientific foundations, through research actions focused on coastal management and environmental education in coastal communities."

Rancho Campeche Culture Initiatives Foundation

A non-profit entity that seeks to contribute to the sustainable development, through the strengthening of protectionist habits, conservationist attitudes and respect for the environment and culture.

Ibero-American Landscape Management Network

Red Iberoamericana de Manejo de Paisajes (RIMAP for its initials in Spanish) seeks to promote, coordinate and direct the restoration and management of degradated forest landscapes, as well as the horizontal exchange of knowledge on methodologies and procedures that will provide effective solutions through the practice of innovative citizen participation models, based on the principles of an eco-systemic approach.

National Enterprise Environment Protection Support Network

RENAEPA is the organization used as a reference by authorities, environmental communities and the business sector. Our institution has outlined as its core objective, the defense and protection of the Dominican Republic's natural resources, through joint actions that will lead to sustainable growth for the country. Some examples of our actions are: business coalitions for the protection of the Higuamo and Haina rivers, reforestation duties, our recycling agenda and the active participation campaign "Clean Production".

Reef Check Dominican Republic

Reef Check Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of two ecosystems: tropical coral reefs and California's rocky reefs. Headquartered in Los Angeles and with volunteer teams in over 80 countries, Reef Check works to create partnerships among community volunteers, government agencies, companies, universities and other non-profit organizations.

Save the Children Foundation

The natural inheritance left for future generations is a heritage that must be preserved. Therefore, the objective of the Save the Children, Dominican Republic Natural Resources and Environment Program-FUDECO, is to improve the living conditions of the poorest populations, through measures that will improve the quality of farming soil, tus preserving and restoring the environment.

Dominican Association of Farming and Forest Researchers

A non profit association, commited to education, growth, ethics and work conditions of researchers, which promotes quality, expansion and ownership rights of research, as well as national and international cooperation. The association also seeks to guide society on scientific and technological research in the farming and forest sectors.

Barahona Ecologic Society

Sociedad Ecológica de Barahona (SOEBA) is a non profit group that fights for the protection and preservation of the natural resources of Barahona and Enriquillo, through educational activities, denouncing ecologic damages and creating and/or executing proposals, plans, programs and projects.

Cibao Ecologic Society

Sociedad Ecológica del Cibao, Inc. (SOECI) is a private conservationist, environmentalist institution, comprised of volunteers, established to seek the defense of the environment. It does not have financial, political, partisan or religious goals. It is the first of its kind in the Dominican Republic.

The Nature Conservacy

The Nature Conservancy is a non-profit, international organization, primordialy dedicated to the preservation of biodiversity on the planet.

Open Adult University

Universidad Abierta Para Adultos offers top quality permanent higher education, through a distance education method that guarantees the comprehensive preparation of professionals and leaders capable of responding to society's need for knowledge.

Santo Domingo Autonomous University

UASD is an institution that brings together professors, students and other workers that support the academic activity, with the purpose of fulfilling the university's mission of searching for truth, promoting a better future for the Dominican society, and strengthening its authentic values. Its main functions are teaching, research, extension programs, planning, management and institutional participation.

Northeast Catholic University

"Universidad Católica Nordestana (UCNE) was established on March 14, 1978. It is a non-profit, higher education catholic institution, at the service of the community, lead by Obispado de San Francisco de Macorís, and sponsored by Fundación Universitaria Católica Nordestana, Inc. Its main purpose is to contribute to scientific, technological, socio-cultural and spiritual development, through teaching/learning processes, research and extension programs, all within the ethical-spiritual principles that promote the comprehensive realization of human beings, within a pluralistic, ever changing society."

Universidad Católica Tecnológica del Cibao - UCATECI - is a part of the community's heritage, established to contribute to the development of the Cibao region, and that of the entire country, offering opportunities under the umbrella of equality to all those who possess the desire and entrepreneurial spririt necessary to harvest growth, in the fields of technology and science.

University for the Elderly

UTE bases its creation and views its institutional actions within the philosophical framework of a higher education model geared towards preparing adults that are competent and commited to global development, through undergraduate and graduate programs aimed at rescuing "The Social Right to Education" though humanitarian principles of getting along, living with ethics and promoting self-development, to achieve a reaffirmation of the most elevated values of human conscience.

Dominican American University

"Domínico Americano is a non-profit organization which offers educational options. It is free of political ideology and independent of any religious or partisan management. Its mission is to spread and promote education, in English and Spanish, of the disciplines required to respond, with efficiency, to the country's need for educators, preparing citizens who are capable of achieving development in all areas."

Ibero-American University

Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) is a Higher Education Center that promotes academic excellence, research and preparation of highly qualified professionals who are capable of generating and leading changes, under the ethic principles necessary to contribute to local and global development.

Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University

Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña, a private, non-profit institution, has as its mission the integrated, professional development, and ongoing improvement of human capital, as active agents of change, and idoneous candidates to bring about the changes required by society and to contribute to the success of the employment and business arenas, abiding by the rules of ethics, science and technology, through ongoing efforts in research, innovation and knowledge extension. Universidad para la Cooperación Internacional (UCI for its initialas in Spanish) is a private university duly credited in Costa Rica by Consejo Superior de Educación de las Universidades Privadas (Private University Education Board) through article 2, session 238-94, which took place on April 21, 1994.
