About GFDD

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) is a private non-profit, non-partisan institution, dedicated to promoting collaboration between foreign and international organizations, and the Dominican Republic, with the objectives of conducting studies and research, raising the levels of understanding and public opinion, designing strategies and public policies, offering educational programs and professional training, and implementing development and exchange programs in areas critical to the social, economic and democratic development of the Dominican Republic, the Caribbean Region and all of Latin America.

Brief History
Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) is a sister institution of Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE). It is headquartered in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. FUNGLODE was founded by Dr. Leonel Fernández in the year 2000, at the end of his first presidential term. GFDD was incorporated under the laws of the United States of America in the year 2002, with the objective of increasing and broadening FUNGLODE’s international presence and visibility, and of strengthening, in particular, its collaboration and exchange with US institutions. FUNGLODE and GFDD were conceived and created by President Fernández as a result of his desire to continue contributing to the social, economic and democratic development of the Dominican Republic and the entire region, from a non-partisan platform, with an innovative philosophy, and international scope. After his tenure as Chairman of FUNGLODE and GFDD, and as a result of his election as President of the Dominican Republic in 2004, Dr. Fernández became Honorary President of the institution.

GFDD’s mission is to identify relevant themes and develop partnerships with outstanding international partners, in order to formulate and execute initiatives aimed at promoting a sustainable socio-economic development and the strengthening of democracy in the Dominican Republic and all of Latin America. GFDD establishes, nourishes and reinforces collaborations and exchange among organizations and the general public of the Dominican Republic residing in the country and abroad, and the rest of the Western Hemisphere.

Our vision is the strengthening of democratic institutionality and full sustainable socio-economic development in the Dominican Republic and Latin America, by means of a turn-key, inclusive process of modernization, that will enable the country and the region to successfully face the challenges of 21st century.
