Institution Sponsors Carpenter Bee Breeding Project

Through the VII Convocatoria Anual del Fondo Nacional de Innovación y Desarrollo Científico y Tecnológico (Fondocyt) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCYT by its acronym in Spanish), held in 2012, the proposed research project Using Native Dominican Carpenter Bee (Xylocopamordax) as a pollinating agent of the tomato crop in greenhouses: a local potential alternative to the introduction of bumblebees of the Bombus genre, to the Agroforestry University Fernando Arturo de Merino (Uafam by its acronym in Spanish) in Jarabacoa..

This research of national interest aims to demonstrate and promote the use of the carpenter bee of Hispaniola (Xylocopamordax) as an efficient pollinator in the tomato crop under a protected environment. The expected results of the project were: a) Provide truthful information to validate the use of pollinator Xylocopamordax as a tomato crop under protected environment; b) Prevent the introduction of alien species of pollinators that may pose risks to native species; c) Supplying a local pollinator producers of tomato crop in greenhouses; d) Increase the amount of critical researchers on this and other topics of interest to increase agricultural productivity under protected environment (greenhouse) and open sky in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean.

Compared to mechanical pollination, the bumblebee is a very effective pollinator as it can pollinate flowers between 0093-0136 milliseconds. In other words, in 10 minutes it can pollinate directly more than 70 flowers.

The hypothesis that the carpenter bumblebee of Hispaniola (Xylocopamordax) is an efficient pollinator of tomato in protected environments was validated. The use of the carpenter bee as a pollinator of crops in protected environments is viable and feasible; so there is no need to introduce foreign species to our wildlife, which may become pests, spread disease and displace native pollinators.

Tomato pollinated by the carpenter bumblebee inside the greenhouse is handled as an organic crop, because insects are inside the greenhouse and no pesticides are used. In an emergency, you can make applications with moderate-spectrum pesticide at the end of the evening when the bees are in their nests.
