Fire Affected Forest Area of Pedernales
Dominican Republic, 10/4/2015

The dense forest has been affected in the river basin of Mulito, an affluent of Pedernales. According to inhabitants of the nearest community of Mencia, the loss of old trees has been caused by fire caused by people who were logging for planting at the top.

According to John Thomas Espinal, known as Bruijn, "What happens is that those people who burned to plant smaller products such as corn, beans and others, lost control of the fire and it extended down the river."

A publication on the site page of the newspaper Nacional states that the fire has affected precious woods such as mahogany and white cigua cabirmay, species that Environment  has included in the special reforestation plans abound in this area, more than a thousand meters above sea level.
The devastation is above the beautiful river, but it is difficult to have access from the flow to the devastated area because, at some points, is up to one hundred meters.

The Mulito is the main and almost the only tributary of the Pedernales River that provides drinking water and irrigation used for agriculture of Pedernales and Anses a- Pitre, a municipality the south of the Haitian border.

This river has dozens of special areas. The best known is under the Army detachment, which attract hundreds of tourists on weekends.
